Beginning with oil pastel painting

My art desk at home is constantly rotating my latest obsession with one craft or another. Earlier this year, I took up diamond painting. Meticulously placed round or square crystals called drills placed on a predesignated colored canvas, that makes up a beautiful work of art. Basically, the adult version of color-by-numbers. To make my projects last longer, I’ve worked on them a little bit at a time, storing them away for months to revisit at a later date. I quickly found out good quality canvases with artworks from artists that I love can be quite pricey, so I did t want to burn through the one I have.

Lately I’ve decided to revisit my oil pastels. I’ve always been proud of myself for dedicating the whole of 2017 to teaching myself watercolor painting and I hope to do the same with other art mediums. Art school was so fun as a freshman, those entry level classes introducing me to photography, lithography print making and oil painting among other things. It’s a shame I couldn’t pursue them all to the fullest when I focused in on graphic design. So now, I’ll teach myself and I have no limitations on how long it will take. I’ve always believed being a student in the arts is a life-long journey and doesn’t stop after graduating college. So here we are, revisiting oil pastels after a brief stint with them in 2019.

First attempt at a face with oil pastels

I've had such a fun time with these studies. I find food has been my favorite thing to draw so far. Later, I'll do a review for each of the oil pastel brands I have been using.
